In school I was asked the make a blog post about my feelings on a specific topic in the novel "
The Lord Of The Flies". I hope you all like my thoughts on this book.
In the novel
The Lord Of The Flies, written by William Golding, we read many things about how a group of boys become stranded on an island that they find is uninhabited by humans. We read about how the boys try to work together on the island by voting for a leader, making shelter, and sending out signals by fire in the hopes that they may be rescued. But it is not too long before we start to see an unresolved conflict among the boys that is difficult to solve, that conflict being the beginning of the loss of their civilized humanity.
As we read, sometimes it is not quite clear why these boys start to fall into savageness or what was the turning point from their civilized lives to their current feral state. But as I have read this book I have come across a chapter in the book that explains what was the turning point in these boys lives that started to make them so untamed; this part in the book being when Jack and his hunters killed a maternal sow (Mother pig), and offered it's head as a sacrifice to the beast that they believe to be on the island.
“This head is for the beast. It’s a gift.” Jack says after he has killed the sow. Those are the words that seem to sting me the most. This statement clearly explains what is happening to the boys; this is the first sign of their devolution. Devolution is the opposite of evolution, meaning that instead of the human mind becoming more advanced and modernized they are becoming less then men; they are becoming animals. They are actually taking the action of killing a mother pig and offering her up as a sacrifice for a beast that does not even exist, this shows us how cruel and animal like the boys are becoming and how they are diverting further and further from humanity.
